Episode 35 (June 2020) Alone Together Part I - Lifelines for the Frontlines
Due to the COVID-19 crisis and making music of my own over the past few months I haven't done a new podcast in awhile. The next three are very special. Cleveland troubadour and local legend Charlie Wiener came up with a plan, along with a few other people, to bring music to our homes since we can't go out to clubs, so he had Northeast Ohio's best singer/songwriters record songs in their homes and he showed them. One of the goals was to raise money for personal protective equipment for workers, food banks and other charity organisations involved in fighting the COVID crisis. Each performer in these shows have corresponding videos and others available on YouTube, so if you like what you hear here, please check out their video pages and drop a tip in their respective virtual tip-jars or PayPal accounts!!! No one is making money as long as the clubs remain closed. This episode and the two that will follow will feature that music, and it's great stuff. Episode 32 (September 2019)
This episode features some special content. First of all, there is a mini-tribute to Peter Laughner, a creative genius and founding member of the seminal pre-punk band Rocket from the Tombs and what can, I guess, be called the alt-folk band Cinderella Backstreet. He was generally considered a tortured soul who committed suicide in the late 1970s, leaving behind a large body of work including demos and live recordings. Though he never released an official album during his lifetime, there are many things available through other sources, including a brilliant new five-disc box set that was just released by Smog Veil Records, which has collected pretty much everything that he recorded with various incarnations of his bands and solo demos. This episode also includes some new and old selections of alt-pop, indie bands, experimental and free-jazz.MEG & THE MAGNETOSPHERE: Dragons (from 'Meg & the Magnetosphere' EP)indian rope burn: Two Steps (from 'indian rope burn')CATS ON HOLIDAY: Whiskey Island (from 'Livin' Life and Lovin' It')PETER LAUGHNER: Sylvia Plath (Demo ft Albert Dennis) (from the Smog Veil box) Down At The Bar (Live) (ft Deborah Smith) (from the Smog Veil box) Baudelaire (Demo ft. Episode 25 (October 2018)
I'm very excited about this episode, for a few reasons. To celebrate my 60th birthday I put on a benefit for the non-profit organisation The Music Settlement, which offers early childhood education and music therapy, as well as a number of other programmes for people of all ages designed around music and the arts. So I'm starting the episode with the performers who donated their time for this worthy cause, VICTOR SAMALOT, DEREK DePRATOR AND EVAN KLEVE, JOE ROLLIN PORTER, ALAN GRANDY, CARLOS JONES and ALEX BEVAN, who stepped in when CHARLIE WIENER had to drop out. Then, I owe a true debt of gratitude to Frank Mauceri from Smog Veil records for some incredible early Cleveland underground and blues that has never aired in public before. And the usual assortment of older and newer artists of different musical styles. Pay attention to Rachel Shortt - she's a new find and really amazing.VICTOR SAMALOT - West DawnDEREK DePRATOR AND EVAN KLEVE - T.I.M. Episode 24 (September 2018) A Tribute to Those We've Lost
This special episode is a tribute to those many artists (and one night club) we've lost.We begin with Brian Sands, a quiet and interesting musician who was the creator of the first-ever David Bowie fan club, which got him noticed by Bowie and they got to meet on his first US tour that began here in Cleveland. There's also a tribute to John Korosec, the original bass player for The Plague and Defnics. Also gone but represented here are Mike Hudson (Les Raving Sounds), Jimmy Armstrong (Pony Boys) and Larry Lewis (Faith Academy). And, finally, with the closing of the last of the original clubs that booked original music, The Phantasy Nite Club, we pay tribute by featuring Floydband and Death of Samantha (featuring Doug Gillard of Guided by Voices), who played the final show at the club on the 2nd of this month.BRIAN SANDS: The Day The Elves Could Fly, Orangutango, White Chocolate and Shoeater (from Reheated Chocolate Tangos)BRIAN SANDS: Dialogue In Limbo, Slippery Stones Of Dovedale, Windmills Of Time (from Fixation)THE REPTILES: Man Evolved From Amps (from Some Bad News Called The Reptiles)FLOYDBAND: Dance Yourself To Death (Live)DOUG GILLARD: Angel X (from On Parade)DEATH OF SAMANTHA: What Makes A Man A Man? I first saw The Pagans on Hallowee'n 1978 and filmed their 1986 reunion concert in Cleveland. Then, just before Hallowe'en this year, Mike Hudson, founder and lead singer of the Pagans lost his battle with cancer that hadn't been diagnosed before he had been rushed to hospital that Friday night. Here then is a fitting tribute to one of the original punk rock stars in Cleveland (unless otherwise noted the songs came from the album Everybody Hates You), along with a whole lot of other classic punk from the late 1970s and early 1980s.THE PAGANS; When I Die Cry 815 (Earth Boy Dream Of Angel) Cleveland Confidential (Real World) Dead End America Street Where Nobody Lives (from The Pink Album Plus) What's This Shit Called Love?
