Today we are joined by Olivia Dryden, jeweller and taxidermy artist. Since graduating from Adelaide College of the Arts in 2014, Olivia's career has advanced significantly and she has receive acclaim and recognition for her work. You can find Olivia's website at oliviadrydenjewellery.com Olivia has travelled to India in 2015 for the Helpmann Academy 'Sanskriti Kendra Residency'. The six week residency was an opportunity to escape, be ripped out of her comfort zone and thrown into a world of culture, colour, religion, contrast and overall, just an amazing country. Olivia was also recently awarded one of the inaugural Helpmann Academy Fellowships, supported by the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation valued at up to $20,000 each. This fellowship allowed Olivia to spend three months in London establishing connections and networking opportunities to further develop skills in taxidermy and jewellery making. Olivia's beautiful art comes from a curiosity with death, which arose when she started researching the Victorian Memento Mori period from the 15th to 18th century. She admired the symbolism they used to depict death, like the skull-and-crossbones and the hourglass. She was especially interested in the jewellery that was made using the deceased's hair, and the post-mortem photography. She loved how such a taboo subject, death, could be shown in such a beautiful way. Olivia has had a solo exhibition at 'Life After Death' at Hill Smith Gallery and her jewellery is available in many jewellery stores. We go on a wonderful journey from a childhood loving art, and how Olivia's thirst to keep learning and see the world differently continues and will ever continue. In a profession where only 2% make it, Olivia's passion, network and entrepreneurship is seeing her triumph even with the challenge that comes with life as an artist. Simon has previously worked under the name STORRE in the graffiti art movement since the 1990s, and has evolved his style to take the elements of his street art and reinterprets them in his own unique style balancing precision and imperfection. Today we are joined by James Fergusson, the CEO of MDI (https://www.mdi-global.com) a mobile focused research company launched in 2013. MDI is based in Melbourne, with offices in Cape Town, Miami, Utah, Washington DC and recently launching their European presence from London. MDI has developed and is continuously evolving its own proprietary mobile research platform, and has worked with some of the world's largest consumer brands. This was a very enjoyable chat. I first met James back in 1994 when I started my career in market research at Frank Small and Associates in Melbourne. We were both wide-eyed young researchers, discovering market research somewhat by chance. It's nice to sit down 25 years, and eight kids later (six of these James') to chat. James has enjoyed a highly successful career in market research, including being based in Singapore for seven years in global executive roles for TNS / Kantar with a focus on technology and emerging markets. We discuss James' early days as an entrepreneurial kid mowing the lawns of neighbours to buy lollies and other joys the money brings. And, that a successful career is seldom linear or predictable, and it's best to just embrace the ride. James shares his perspective on the massive impact on research mobile phones have had over the past decade in the developed and developing world, and how this informed the strategy and innovation behind MDI. We hear about the story of MDI, and some lessons for those seeking to build a global facing business from Australia, including how to overcome our innate cultural risk aversion.
