For this tasting I was joined by Sother Teague, bartender, drinks writer, and host of The Speakeasy Podcast at his bar Amor y Amargo in NYC’s East Village. Sother is known for his love of bitter and amari, so I brought him the closest thing I’ve found from Grandma’s collection – a Bottle #42: Dubonnet. This classic French fortifed wine has a long history, including being a favorite of the recently departed Queen Elizabeth. We tasted my tiny bottle of 1970s French Dubonnet up against two comparison bottles: a modern bottle of French Dubonnet and a modern bottle of American Dubonnet from Heaven Hill. While two products with the same name, they diverged from each other around World War II, so this was a really interesting opportunity to see how they all compared! When I realized my tiny bottle of Canadian Club was from 1972, I knew I had no choice about who to taste it with. That’s my birth year, so clearly I was going to taste it with my Dad! In this episode I talk about how Canadian whisky is made, what makes Canadian whisky different from American whiskey, and why in Canada it's all called "rye". When Lot No. 40 was first released in 1998 (the era of my bottle), it broke a lot of those rules, which helped explain why it came and went, then came again. But since 2012 it's been here to stay, thanks to the craft cocktail revival and changing whiskey tastes.
