The problem with that is that collaboration takes time, coordination, skill and effort, which means sometimes it gets put aside for the sake of something else. In this episode of the PAWCast, Ben and Dr. Riolo sit down to discuss the necessity for collaboration as well as the barriers that hold us back from actively engaging that process. Finding My Why Feat. Rebecca Enerson & Aimee Labrie | PAWCast 68 | Veterinary Podcast
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/rt2-wVC0_FU Over the last few months, PAW Health has been blessed to have Rebecca Enerson and Aimee Labrie from the MSU Veterinary School here with us on a summer long externship. As third year vet students, it was their mission to "put on the shoes" of emergency veterinary medicine and see if it is actually of interest to them. They've been able to work on their skills and knowledge base as well as make long lasting connections with those who are here and committed to serve the patient. But they also did another, unintended thing. They found their "why." The year 2020 and into 2021 was a dark one for them as vet students. Almost all learning transitioned to being online. Events ceased. Friends and colleagues began to struggle and over time, many felt as though all hope was lost. They began to wonder why they even bothered embarking on this difficult journey in the first place. This is the story of how both Rebecca and Aimee re-found their "why." We hope you enjoy it. The Veterinary Night Life | PAWCast 67 | Veterinary Podcast
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Q64-hvP1_9w Working the overnights as a veterinarian can be a tall task. You're typically one of very few, if not the only vet on shift within a hundred mile radius. You're only seeing critical and urgent care patients. You have to perform surgeries and attend to hospitalized patients with a high degree of both efficiency and accuracy. And you almost always have to do it while your clients wish they didn't have such a long wait time. In short, the veterinary night lift is not an easy one. It's no wonder that so many veterinary professionals prefer to work during daylight hours. So, for the crazy few that are attracted to the role, what keeps them coming back? Do they see great purpose in what they do or are they just gluttons for punishment. To find out, we have Dr. Rheannon Burris join us to discuss the last year of her time as an overnight veterinarian and how it has taken her from being a baby doctor to a true veterinary professional. This is Dr. Burris' second appearance on the PAWCast. Check out her post-externship PAWCast here: https://youtu.be/hRg4mTUeEi8  Like, Share and Subscribe! It's Not Just Another Job | PAWCast 66 | Veterinary Podcast
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZbjW0bKBlVU  We know that there is a significant gap in between the demand for veterinary services and the availability of veterinary services. But, per the AVMA, we have a surplus of doctors in the profession (in small animal clinics), so that means that we have to look further. It has been reported that there are.6 CVTs for every 1 DVM in the profession. CVTs, paired with uncertified medical staff, hereby referred to as MSS (Medical Support Staff) are the hands that every doctor uses to implement patient care. That means diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, vaccines, estimates... Basically everything that happens in a veterinary clinic has to go through the hands of the medical support team before anything happens. That means that when there's a lack of skilled workers to fulfill what is necessary, patient care suffers. So how do we get more people interested and involved in veterinary medicine? We first have to make it more than just another job. Do you think working as a CVT or MSS is a viable long term career option? Let us know in the comments! Like, Share and Subscribe! Inefficient or Short Staffed? Both. | PAWCast 65 | Veterinary Podcast
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/6I9FZbt7058  The Washington Post recently released an article discussing the seven industries most desperate for workers. You can find that article here: https://wapo.st/2SIfwpE   This led Ben, Dr. Katie and Dr. Caroline into a discussion on whether or not the veterinary industry has problems more sourced in being short staffed or in being inefficient. If you have listened to the PAWCast in the past, you know that we are big believers in care provision models heavily focused on efficiency and availability, but we can also acknowledge that not everyone can perform veterinary medicine the way that we do at PAW Health Network. So, to understand the issue of veterinary staff shortages more effectively, this episode is a deep dive into the reality of staffing, wages, benefits and the impact of COVID-19 on the veterinary community. All the referenced articles and reports are linked below. What's your opinion? Are we actually short staffed or do you think the problems could be solved if we were more efficient in the way care is provided across the board? Let us know in the comments! The Reality of Veterinary Mental Health feat. Dr. Dustin Kieschnick | PAWCast 64

The Reality of Veterinary Mental Health feat. Dr. Dustin Kieschnick | PAWCast 64
If you have listened to the PAWCast at any point, you know we are big believers in the concept of accountability. We have analyzed the process of reaching mutual solutions both in the consultation room with caregivers, in the treatment area with our teams, and in meetings with our leaders. In that process, we have concluded through many trials and errors that we HAVE to start with a shared reality before we can implement any (hopefully effective) solutions. So knowing that there is a significant issue regarding the mental health of veterinary professionals, we seek to apply the same problem solving method by first establishing a professionally understood and shared reality. With that goal in mind, it is time to bring in a professional. Dr. Dustin Kieschnick received his doctorate from the joint program between the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. He is currently the Associate Director of Research of Scalable Therapeutics at the University of California, San Francisco. He has trained at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center and the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. Dr. Kieschnick’s research and clinical focus is on grief, trauma, and suicidality. Prior to his career in clinical psychology, Dr. Kieschnick served in the United States Marine Corps for 9 years. Dr. Kieschnick is also a contributor to the Veterinary Mental Health Initiative leading weekly support groups and one on one sessions. You can find more information on the group here: https://bit.ly/2SvPZzO In this episode, we will discuss Dr. Kieschnick's background, military experience, career path and professional understanding of the state of mental health in the veterinary industry and how that relates to our experiences here at PAW Health. We're Not Fighting, We're Collaborating | PAWCast 63 | Veterinary Podcast
Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/MSvdsr0Akp0  Have you ever been engaging with a co-worker and had someone come up to you to ask if everything is ok? The outsider to the conversation assumes that a fight was occurring when in fact, your were merely collaborating with no attention to the emotional management between each other. When you encourage maximum individuality, it can yield both great returns but also unnecessary conflict. We as individuals are difficult to understand, often times to others and sometimes to ourselves. So if you value people being themselves, what keeps them together? How do you have a unified team of individuals and not force people into a specific box of behaviors and motivators? How do you actually keep people from fighting and encourage collaboration? You do it through shared purpose. Being here to serve the same goal is the glue between a team of unique individuals. In this episode, we discuss how two very unique individuals in Molly and Caroline are able to collaborate so effectively even though they are very different from one another. We review their ADVanced Insights Assessment data to understand more effectively where their natural conflict points are and how to at LEAST manage them, if not use them to their advantage in patient care. We also review what they admire most about each other in the workplace as well as what they find most infuriating! If you are ready to take the next step in collaboration, this episode is for you. Divided We Fall | PAWCast 60 | Veterinary Podcast
As a profession, we have to start solving our problems together. We have to unify as veterinary professionals and implement solutions that help all of us, not just some of us. The more we isolate our clinics, the more we niche down and the more we focus on our own outcomes over the industry, the worse the problems become. On this weeks PAWCast, Dr. Carlo and Ben dissect a recommendation to limit availability and affordability within the veterinary clinic to improve the survival mode of the staff. We also discuss John Nash's non-cooperative game theory and how that thinking by professionals impacts the well being of their patients. It's time. We need to unify. We need to have each other's backs. We need to make a better future for ourselves and those around us. Like, Share and Subscribe! Process & Purpose feat. Molly Backlund | PAWCast 59 | Veterinary Podcast
For the first time, the PAWCast assigned homework in episode 55. Molly was tasked with drawing the lines between clinic process and our shared purpose of Serve The Patient. As any good teacher does, this week is all about the beginning of her journey in learning that method of communication and some of the initial roadblock she has faced. We use tools such as her assessment and the dichotomy of leadership to further understand those issues and relate them in a universal way to those seeking to improve their collaboration within their clinic. We also discuss the couple times Molly has had to work within the state board review process as a veterinary technician, as well as a highly unique 'Heather' case as we refer to them here at PAW. In this episode, we discuss Molly's growth plan, her path forward in improving collaboration, the things she has learned in learning by accountability, the insanity of working night shifts, and how to communicate purpose within process and why that works so well in coaching. If you are ready to take the next step in collaboration, this episode is for you. How do you find you have to adjust your communication style to collaborate best with your team? Trust Your Gut | PAWCast 58 | Veterinary Podcast
In all honesty, has your intuition ever been wrong? Have you ever regretted following your gut instinct? Most of the time, we try to do the 'logical' thing against our instinct for many and various reasons, however that can lead us down unfulfilling paths. In our professional lives, the 'logical' choice can lead us away from our true passions or into serving ideas that are finite in their measure. On this weeks PAWCast, Dr. Caroline and Ben tackle the idea of trusting your gut. We talk about how to listen to get more in tune with your intuition. We discuss the idea of putting a decision to a coin flip, the feeling of hoping it falls a certain way, and how to follow that instinct. We also discuss how to be selective in who you put your work into and how your intuition tells you to get out when necessary. What do you do to be more in tune with your intution? Do you listen and follow it well? Let us know in the comments! Like, Share and Subscribe! Will I Find My Dream Practice? feat. Breanna Demaline | PAWCast 56 | Veterinary Podcast
Young veterinary professionals are nearing graduation and the beginning of their working lives. Many have already accepted their first job offers, but the status of our industry has sown significant doubt into the minds of those entering the profession in thinking they may never find a place they truly love to work. Our profession is filled with passionate, intelligent and altruistic people, but the slow death of the traditional practice and the overtaking of corporate medicine doesn't provide a lot of hope for our best and brightest. On this weeks PAWCast, we are joined by future Dr. Breanna Demaline. Bre attends Michigan State University CVM and is the president of the MSU VBMA (Veterinary Business Management Association) chapter. We have had the great opportunity to collaborate with and mentor Dr. Demaline since the beginning of her veterinary school experience, and during a recent VBMA event, she posed a great question. "What if I never find my dream practice?" In this episode, Dr. Carlo, Dr. Caroline, Dr. Bre and Ben all discuss the search for a great practice to work in and potentially purchase as well as what variables to audit while you are working to know if you're in the right place. What do you look for in a place to work or a team to work with? Do you have any deciding variables that make of break that decision? Let us know in the comments! Like, Share and Subscribe! Collaboration & Accountability Feat. Molly Backlund | PAWCast 55 | Veterinary Podcast
The life of a veterinary technician is not an easy one, especially when working overnights. It requires a way of communicating that can be difficult for some, but necessary for the patient. That means that a different type of person tends to be attracted to and thrive in the emergency and overnight practice setting. Someone who is ready to learn and coach with accountability. Someone ready to seek collaboration to implement solutions. On this weeks PAWCast, we are joined again by Molly Backlund. Molly is a CVT here at PAW as well as our Shelter Engagement Coordinator. In this episode, we discuss Molly's role as a CVT, her love for committing fully to patients in the clinic, the things she has learned in collaboration and learning by accountability, the insanity of working night shifts, and how to communicate purpose within process and why that works so well in coaching. If you are ready to take the next step in collaboration, this episode is for you. How do you find you have to adjust your communication style to collaborate best with your team? Do You Have Grit? | PAWCast 53 | Veterinary Podcast
"In sum, no matter the domain, the highly successful had a kind of ferocious determination that played our in two ways. First, these exemplars were unusually resilient and hardworking. Second, they knew in a very, very deep way what it was that they wanted. They not only had determination, they had direction." That is an excerpt from the book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth. In her research, Angela takes a deep look into how people survive the struggle of gaining success and what it means to have Grit. In the book, she shares her research tool she coined as the 'Grit Scale' and on this week's PAWCast, Ben and Caroline review the 8 questions and provide the context to their answers. This is the first part of a two part series on this topic, so be sure to tune into the next Tuesdays with Caroline when we review the results! Be True to Yourself and Everyone Else feat. Molly Backlund | PAWCast 52 | Veterinary Podcast
Balancing individuality and shared purpose is something that is hard for most teams to handle. We tend to enjoy assimilation and being surrounded by people that are like minded to us. However, here at PAW Health, we have been blessed with having a diverse team, and realizing that encouraging differences among staff allows us to serve the patient more effectively. On this weeks PAWCast, we welcome Molly Backlund. Molly is a CVT here at PAW as well as our Shelter Engagement Coordinator. She is also the reason we learned that valuable lesson in the early days of PAW Health Network. In this episode, we discuss Molly's path into veterinary medicine, her 'black sheep' personality, the things she has learned in communication and collaboration, the insanity of working night shifts, and most importantly, how being true to herself has allowed her to be successful and fulfilled in her professional life.
