John J. Kim is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and the Oakland Tribune, among other publications. He earned the 2011 Pulitzer in local reporting as part of a team reporting on city homicides for the Sun-Times. Kim has worked for the Tribune since 2012, contributing daily coverage throughout the newspaper. He’s also captured numerous iconic sports photos for the paper, including images from the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series run. Bernard Schoenburg's career in journalism began at The Daily Illini, investigating a fraternity that was scalping concert tickets. He went on to work at the Bloomington Pantagraph in 1977, then at the Associated Press in Chicago, and eventually to the Springfield Journal-Register in 1990. He was also a regular host of "CapitolView," a weekly political affairs program on public TV. His tenacity and work ethic made him a powerful force in political journalism in Illinois. Schoenburg covered national political conventions, grilled governors, state legislators, members of Congress, and former President Barack Obama when he was a state and U.S. senator. Always fair, never shy, he held governors, representatives, senators, and institutions accountable. Schoenburg was part of the team that won a prestigious George Polk Award in 1994 for its "Cash Transaction" series about campaign contributions and government contracts. He also received numerous awards for his work as a columnist. Allan Loudell arrived at WPGU in the fall of 1973 as a fully formed radio news pro. As a freshman who had been trained at Lyons Township High School’s WLTL-FM, Loudell quickly became WPGU’s News Director. His career later took him to Delaware, where his work at WILM and WDEL impressed listeners and subjects—including future President Joe Biden. Among his awards is a Crystal Radio Award from the National Association of Broadcasters and the “Best Radio Newscast” honor from the Society of Professional Journalists. Nelson Algren was an American author whose 1949 novel The Man with the Golden Arm won the National Book Award for Fiction and was later made into a movie, with protagonist Frankie Machine played by Frank Sinatra. Algren was born in 1909 in Detroit and raised on the South Side of Chicago. He was a reporter for The Daily Illini and graduated from Illinois in 1931, during the height of the Depression. Like many in that era, he struggled to find work--and began taking jobs anywhere and everywhere, including as a carnival worker and a coffee salesman. He was inducted into the Academy of Arts and Letters shortly before his death in 1981 at the age of 72.WPGU Program Director J. Wayne Miller’s resume includes three books and two Guggenheim Fellowships. He was president of Magnum Photos, a freelance photographer for Life Magazine, National Geographic and Ebony, a member of the American Society of Magazine Photographers and co-curator of the Museum of Modern Art's historic exhibit "The Family of Man." Assigned to Edward Steichen's U. S. Navy Combat Photo Unit, he was one of the first Americans to photograph Hiroshima after it was bombed. Robert "Buck" Brown was an iconic and prolific cartoonist whose thousands of pieces appeared in Playboy, Esquire, Ebony, and Jet. Buck's cartoons ranged widely in subject matter from the sexual revolution, golfing, and westerns to parodies of figures from history and literature. He is perhaps best known for inventing the character of "Naughty Granny" for Playboy in 1966. As an African American artist, his insight and humor were an important contribution to the magazine during and after the American civil rights movement.
