Today we celebrate the 75th anniversary of Windrush. However, this is a recording of an address given by Dr R David Muir in regards to the 60th Anniversary of Windrush as part of an anniversary event hosted by the Development and Missions Network:Christian Aid in 2008 which we played for our sermon on this particular day. As Christians, we often face challenges and obstacles that can lead to discouragement and even complaining. However, in Numbers 21, we see Moses raising up a serpent, which is a picture of Jesus on the cross. The serpent was made of brass, which is symbolic of judgment and sin. Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us. He took all the sickness, pain, and suffering of the world on himself and took the punishment of death on himself. Then, he rose again from the dead. Jesus is the solution to all our problems. Whatever our situation is today, Jesus is the solution. He is the essence of our prayers, the door to get it, the power that authorises it, the substitute that provides it, the Name that empowers it, and the blood that paid for it. Pastor David brings our focus to the ascension of Jesus and its importance in the chronology of Jesus' life on Earth. Jesus presented himself alive to the disciples and others. He did not just show Himself to one or two people after his resurrection, but to over 500 at one appearance. If you take into account all of his appearances, it is estimated that he appeared to at least 600 people. Food plays a significant role in our lives, even from the very beginning when it was related to the sin of eating something we weren't supposed to. Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and was tempted to turn stones into bread, but resisted. In this episode Pastor David reminds us how important food is in our lives and in the stories of Jesus. Centering on John 21, we see that the disciples experience a mircale similar to one they had encountered three and a half years before. This realisation reminded them of the power of Jesus' word and that God would be with them as they preached the gospel. The lesson was centred around Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and rich, sought to see Jesus but because of the large crowd (and he was a short man), he was not able to get a proper look. He ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him. When Jesus came to the place of the tree, he looked up and saw Zacchaeus and told him to come down as he is inviting himself to stay at his house that very evening. Even though the people complained, Zacchaeus accepted Jesus joyfully. He even offered to give half of his goods to the poor and restore fourfold if he ever took anything from anyone by false accusation. The gospel is for everyone, rich or poor. In this episode Pastor David encourages us that while it is good to focus on helping the poor, we must not forget that the gospel is for all. God extends grace to the humble. Jesus' example of reaching out to all classes, regardless of their wealth or status, is something to be followed. Richard recounts the story of two of Jesus' followers as they were travelling from Jerusalem to Emmaus and the disappointment they shared when they realised that Jesus had not saved them from the tyranny of the Romans. The common thought at the time was that Jesus arrival on the earth was, in large part, to overthrow the Romans with a mighty hand and establish God's kingdom rule. However, God's plan was different and even though it was right in front of them, they didn't understand it. Richard explains that God's plans are often hidden and require us to look deeper and trust in Him. He reminds us that we must trust in God even if His plans don't always seem to align with our own expectations.
