Empowering Change : 50 Convincing Explanations to Support the Democratic Party

Section 4: Education and Workforce Development

Explanation 17: Expanding Access to Higher Education

Higher education plays a crucial role in shaping the future of individuals and societies. It empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and opportunities for personal growth and economic advancement. The Democratic Party recognizes the importance of expanding access to higher education and believes in creating a fair and inclusive system that benefits all Americans.

Access to higher education should not be limited by financial barriers. Numerous studies have shown that individuals with higher levels of education generally have higher incomes, better job prospects, and improved overall well-being. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that higher education is accessible to everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic background.

By expanding access to higher education, we can foster a more equitable society. It enables individuals from underprivileged communities to overcome the cycle of poverty and create a better future for themselves and their families. A study conducted by the College Board found that individuals with a bachelor's degree earn significantly higher wages compared to those with only a high school diploma.

Moreover, increasing access to higher education leads to a more skilled workforce. As the economy continues to evolve, jobs increasingly require specialized knowledge and advanced skills. By investing in higher education, we can equip individuals with the tools they need to thrive in the modern workforce. A report by Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce predicts that by 2020, 65% of all jobs in the economy will require some form of postsecondary education or training.

Expanding access to higher education also promotes social mobility. It allows individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to break free from the constraints of their circumstances and pursue their dreams. Research conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts indicates that individuals with a bachelor's degree are more likely to move up the income ladder compared to those without a degree.
