Renée is the Director of Philanthropy for the band’s foundation, All Within My Hands, and also has a storied background in music as a well-known Bay Area radio personality. Each week will sound a little different, but you’ll always remain in the loop. Steffan and Renée will keep you posted with the latest news and updates from Metallica HQ and the road as the M72 Tour makes its way around the world. Episode 33: Producer Greg Fidelman
The week of March 13, 2024 on The Metallica Report… When it comes to Metallica’s creative process, Greg Fidelman has become the “unofficially official” fifth member of the band. He began his music career in the late ’80s as the lead guitarist of his own group, but Greg really hit his stride on the other side of the studio glass about a decade later. From engineer to mixer to producer, this Grammy-winner has worked with some major heavyweights, including Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Slayer.  As you may know - and as Steffan, Renée, and the whole Metallica operation are thankful for - he’s been firmly entrenched in the Metallica camp since 2008, when he joined Rick Rubin’s Death Magnetic production team.  The Metallica Report - your official, weekly guide for all things Metallica, straight from the source. Episode 29: All Things HQ - Part 1: Robert Trujillo, Staffers Jeff Yeager, Jack Ketcham, Kent Matcke
This week of February 14, 2024 on The Metallica Report… The first of two episodes recorded at the band’s creative ground zero for over 20 years: Metallica HQ. Steffan and Renée set up shop in the Jam Room with three people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the Metallica Machine moving. Jeff Yeager - webmaster, touring photographer/videographer, and all-around “do whatever it takes” guy - brings us back to the first event held at HQ and shares what elements of the building hold particular meaning for him. Jack Ketcham - one of the unsung heroes of the operation - details a day in the life of a runner, starting with being first in the door and ending as the last to go home. Kent Matcke - HQ veteran, audio specialist, and glue guy of the team - gives us just a glimpse of how “there is always something” in the life of the HQ recording engineer. And a man you’re more familiar with, Robert Trujillo, joins the conversation and offers his connection to HQ as not just a rehearsal and recording space but a true home away from home! Episode 21: The Best of the First 20 Episodes; Lars on his current favorite tunes, Kirk on surfing, James on Power Trip, Robert on creating new music for each show, plus more!
The week of December 20, 2023 on The Metallica Report… We’re going to sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the highlights of the first 20 episodes of The Metallica Report. Remember Lars and that iPod? (think Blue Oyster Cult!) What about Kirk catching waves or James’ love of a good music festival? And who could forget Robert’s night on stage in Dallas? First, Steffan gives us his review of a night out in the East Bay watching two bands featuring HQ staffers: Dana Lindstrom’s Milk For The Angry and previous pod interviewee Avi Vinocur’s Badnight, Texas (the hard core version of Goodnight, Texas).  Next we’ll revisit interviews from the first 20 episodes as all four guys gave us some great stories about their hobbies, music, being on stage (beachball chaos! guitar solos!) and creating new material for every show. We close out with Robert chiming in to share his Christmas plans with us. Happy Holidays to all . . . we’ll be back next week to celebrate the New Year! Episode 20: Rob hangs with Geddy Lee; Christian Carichner, Iowa State University Marching Band Director
The week of December 13, 2023 on The Metallica Report… Rob Trujillo brings us behind the scenes of “Are Bass Players Human Too?”, the new docuseries from Rush’s Geddy Lee. As the focus of one of four episodes, Rob spent two full days with Geddy, showing him around his Southern California world through surfing, biking, and skating. He also gave Geddy a spin on Jaco Pastorius’ famed “Bass of Doom” while the two shared stories of huge admiration and respect for the legendary bassist. Steffan and Renée catch up with Christian Carichner, Director of the Cyclone Marching Band at Iowa State University. Christian is brimming with enthusiasm as he details what it takes for a marching band to interpret Metallica’s music and how excited he is to open up a whole new audience to the artistry and intricacies of the band’s songs. Congratulations to Christian and the Cyclones, as they are one of the finalists in the “For Whom The Band Tolls” contest; winners will be announced the first week of the year.
