During this podcast, Alec walks through the various trials and tribulations associated with being a top athlete in Russia during a difficult time in history.  Alec provides insight into his mindset associated with constantly adapting to new coaches, new swim squads, transitioning to triathlon in Russia and then taking his talents to the world platform which lasted over ten years.   Imagine your next meal being attached to your ranking as an athlete and the mental angst associated with traveling with your wife and you go through two different lines to make sure the Russian government doesn’t think that you are secretly leaving the country with no intentions of returning – welcome to the trials and tribulations of Alec and his wife Lera.  Alec has agreed to come back and share his coping mechanisms associated with facing such dauting tasks and overcoming the reality of showing up in America with $39 dollars in his pocket with no place to live and not knowing where your next opportunity for income resides.   Background & AccomplishmentsAlec Rukosuev is a retired professional triathlete originally from Omsk, Russia. Born in 1967, he had a distinguished career both in Russia and the United States. In Russia, he excelled as a distance swimmer, becoming the Russian National Champion in the 1500m freestyle in 1991. He transitioned to triathlons, where he continued to achieve notable success. Alec defected from Russia and later became an American citizen. During his triathlon career, he was ranked #1 in the USA in three separate years and competed in six Ironman competitions, including a notable 13th place finish at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. After retiring from professional competition, Alec turned to coaching. He has been highly successful in this role, earning the prestigious American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 5 certification, a distinction held by only a small percentage of top swim coaches in the USA. As the head coach and owner of Fast Lane Aquatics, he has trained numerous top-ranked swimmers and triathletes, including Olympians and national record holders. Alec's coaching philosophy emphasizes dedication, focus, and determination, traits he aims to instill in his athletes. I’m Healthy and I Had a Heart Attack
As a physiologist for 38 years, I thought I had a clear understanding of what a heart attack looks like – boy was I wrong!  I have 12% body fat, I lift weights three times a week and I swim, bike, or run 10+ hours a week.  I don’t eat fried foods, I have never smoked or used street drugs and I get 8-10 hours of sleep every night, with 2-hour naps on the weekends.  How in the world did I not see a heart attack coming?   Please take a moment to hear about my journey, which led to a heart attack and the need for a life-saving heart stent. In this podcast episode with Toolman Dan, I'll walk you through the various symptoms I experienced for over two years: fatigue, shortness of breath, limited mobility, tingling and numbness in my arms, nightmares, irritability, anxiety, anger issues, reduced appetite, brain fog, and vision problems.  I initially attributed these symptoms to long COVID due to the striking similarities, and I resigned myself to living with them. Despite my proactive approach in every possible way, I was mistaken—the symptoms weren't from long COVID but were actually warning signs of severe heart stress that eventually led to a heart attack. My ultimate hope is that everyone worldwide will listen to this podcast with an open mind and consider my symptoms, my approach, and how far off course I was in my understanding. I was fortunate to receive a second chance, and I aspire to inspire others to seek medical attention when things just don't feel right. I'm not a paranoid person, I lead a proactive life, but I wasn't proactive enough, and it nearly cost me everything I hold dear: my wife, children, family, and all of you, my dear friends!
